Refugees Welcome Here

Most years we play in and/or organise at least one tournament for refugee communities in Leeds. Last Saturday we took a strong mixed team to one such fund-raising event, organised by Leeds  Refugee Education, Training  and Advice Service  (RETAS), at Weetwood  Sports Centre.

As our club, Republica Internationale FC, has links with projects in Palestine, and as Palestine has a higher proportion of refugees than anywhere else on earth, we were proud to wear a Palestinian national kit for the day.

We played well in our group games – in fact I thought we played the best football in the group – but conceded two late goals in the  last match with Werder Woodhouse and so and didn’t qualify for the knock-outs.

The event was won by a group from southern Africa called “Bantu United”, beating the RETAS team in the final, but as much as ever it was the taking part that counted.
